Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 - great option for performance all-season tires!

Our Michelin Pilot Sport 4s finally were at about 2/32nds and had to be retired at 32k of usage, so at least they met the warranty lifetime of 30k!  My wife is about to start a new job where there may be more 'weather' to deal with so we opted for the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4s to replace them with.  The tire is excellent, great ride quality and the grip is darn good!

These tires have a 50% upgrade in warranty to 45K so that's a benefit as well for longevity.  Only 54K on our 2016 FoST and loving it!

Here's a review from Tire Rack on performance All-Season tires

Overall, we stuck with the 245/40R18 size for a little width gain from the stock 235 size.  We've been really pleased with them so far!

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S are Installed

Finally got the appointment to have the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires installed - a little wider than stock by 10mm, and 1/2 aspect ratio smaller (40 vs 45) - which doesn't affect the speedometer, etc...

The techs at America's Tire loved the ST and said I would absolutely love the Sport 4S tires - they're super high rated, and knowingly so since they're the successor to the insanely popular Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires...

OEM size of the Goodyear Eagle F1s are 235/45R18 which are a bargain compared to the Michelin rubber, to be honest, less than 1/2 the price!!

 Just check the specs!   👀

We will see about how long these tires last :)  LOL

I'm sure they'll take a few miles to break in as the outer skin wears through - but I'm very impressed with the noise on the road and they feel VERY plush for an aspect ratio of 40!

Even though pricey - I give them 👍👍

Ordered a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S - install pending

Our ST has chewed up the OEM tires, took only 23k miles... but what do you expect from a little rocket that you throw around corners.  I'm surprised they lasted this long!  😆

I've had the Michelin Pilot Super Sport (PSS) on my AMG E55 and even on our 2011 Mazda MX-5 - the handling and grip is amazing!  So I looked for those as a replacement - and found them for $149/ea at America's Tire - alas they're an older set of PSS that they're discounting due to age, and they're being phased out...

So we ordered a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S which is the successor to the ever popular PSS.

We had to go up 10mm in width to fit the Focus @ 245/40R18 (OEM is 235/40R18)
Install is pending this week... feedback to come!

No more drone - Ford Racing Catback!

A few months back, I bought the Cobb 4" catback because it was beautifully handcrafted, great design, and backed by a fantastic name in 4-cyl turbo tuners.  While it all went in great - my ageing ears were struggling with the drone that a 4" catback gives on a 4-cylinder turbo car... just too much for my taste, although it did sound fantastic!

Next up - is Ford Racing 2.5" catback that is actually built by Borla and stamped with Ford all over it... not quite as shiny as the Cobb, but the size difference removes all the drone!

Now, mind you it's not cheap - heck nothing is cheap anymore!  But the quality of this catback is great, everything bolted in quickly and efficiently.

The catback uses clamps to seal the tubing together and it fit snugly together - not unexpected for Borla who makes great quality products!

The Ford Racing design also includes a front resonator to cut back on drone and give a mellow, sporty sound.  The standard Borla part doesn't have the extra resonator and will be louder by design.

The exhaust tips - what everyone sees after you pass them - are a cool fluted design, and while they 'look' slick - we shall see how easy they are to clean...

Driving impression:  The exhaust note is louder than OEM which is great - even initial startup sounds good.  Compared to the Cobb, it's MUCH quieter.  The turbo spool and BOV sounds are more pronounced as well.  Absolutely NO drone when you're in 6th gear and going uphill around 2,500 RPM - this is where the Cobb would remind you that it was there...

Even though it's pricey - this catback gets two 👍👍

Boomba Racing Stage 2 Oil Catch Can - finally installed!

Finally got around to installing the Boomba Racing Boomba Racing Stage 2 Oil Catch Can.  I bought it around Christmastime from a good sale, but never had time until this weekend.

For turbocharged cars, the purpose of an oil catch can is very important. The can should work to prevent blow by of oil, which could lead to dangerous situations of coating couplers, causing them to slide off under boost, coating the fins inside an intercooler which drastically decreases its efficiency, and ultimately end up cooking inside your turbo, contributing to a nasty condition of what is called “oil coking” where the oil turns to a charcoal like substance in the turbo over time. In addition, you don’t want any blow by on your pistons either.

To do this, a catch can works by having one line running from the PCV valve (connected to the block) into the inlet on the catch can. From there, it goes into the can, and past a filter. The oil should collect at the bottom. The Boomba catch can is 350ml (pretty good size) to hold more oil and junk. The filter inside is used to prevent any oil from then escaping back out of the catch can through the other outlet and hose that will run back to the intake manifold.
The installation 'looks' simple - and looking back, had I done the install before it's not too bad.  The instructions are here.  Undoing the bolts for the intake is REALLY simple, 6 bolts - no brainer.  Disconnecting the connectors is EASY.  The hardest part is getting to the PCV connector behind the intake and cutting the hose to the block.

Mounting the catch can takes a little work since it's a tight spot, but there's plenty of play in the coupling to adjust - be sure to tighten everything well :)

I will be checking the can each oil change and 1/2 way in between changes as well.  Will report back on the junk found!

Loaded the Mountune ECU update last night...

After a day of cleaning up the house after Christmas, finally found some time on a chilly night (34F) to put the Mountune ECU tune on the Focus... Yes, even Mountune uses the COBB Accessport (AP3) tuner... they're a VERY nice design...

Very simple process, just plug in the OBD2 port and the unit powers up - since the Mountune MP275 is CARB legal it comes with one pre-programmed tune (that's it).

You follow the on-screen steps, and the ECU load takes about 4-5 minutes - be sure to have a good charge on your battery - they even recommend turning off the headlights or use a battery charger - because if your power dies mid-program - you get to buy a new expensive ECU (yikes!)  Well, no drama for us last night as it programmed just fine :)

The tuner even comes with a Mountune badge, not sure if we'll mount it yet or not - definitely too cold right now...

So - you probably want to know impressions and have me stop blabbering LOL.

After filling up with California 91 Octane (blah) - I took it for a spin.  Now I see why everyone with a tuned ECU talks about traction issues!  Holy crap the car has a ton more power, and most likely I'll need more stuff suspension wise to keep this thing planted!  LOL

The car comes up to speed VERY quickly now, it's a fantastic upgrade - highly recommended.

Definitely 2 thumbs up!

Mountune MP275 kit has finally arrived!

Well in usual fashion, we can't keep our cars stock for very long... but as I get older, I want more 'fun' with less 'risk' as this is a daily driver...  plus with the Black Friday deal we got 20% off the kit!  W00T!

MOUNTUNE MP275 PERFORMANCE UPGRADE - FOCUS ST 2015-16

California Air Resource Board Executive Order D-727-2 Incredible performance without sacrificing reliability!
The Focus ST is a remarkable car and with the addition of the mountune MP275 Performance Upgrade, it’s even more amazing. With optimized power and performance, the MP275 Upgrade adds a level of sharpness that enhances the total driving experience. The MP275 Upgrade has been engineered to extend the power band of the engine resulting in an increase in horsepower and torque across the entire RPM range. The added power provides an even more enjoyable car that is perfect for spirited driving and carving canyons.
An essential element of the MP275 Upgrade is the mountune Upgraded Intercooler. Our intercooler is more than double the size of the original intercooler and provides cool, dense charge air to the engine all the way to redline. Additionally, the air intake system has been improved to allow greater flow to the turbocharger for added power. Backing up the mountune Intercooler and air intake is our performance ECU calibration (tune) engineered to add maximum reliable performance and drivability.
Developed in house by our team of experienced engineers, the MP275 ECU calibration has been validated through a wide range of performance tests and durability cycles including the notorious Nurburgring in Germany. This level of testing ensures safe, reliable performance that does not disappoint.
The MP275 Performance Upgrade is a complete performance upgrade system that is endorsed by Ford and legal in all 50 states.
Installation is easy and requires just a few hours. Additionally, your factory ECU is easily re-calibrated using the included mountune mTune handset. The mTune simply plugs into your car's OBD II port and quickly transfers the upgraded performance engine calibration in about 5 minutes.
The MP275 Performance Upgrade does not void your factory warranty when installed at any Ford dealer or Mountune USA.

Included with the MP275 Performance Upgrade.

Also, to keep things flowing freely - we upgraded the inlet elbow to The Ford Racing 2363-IH-BLK Mountune Induction Hose; High Flow; Black - this will add some style, and some sound - plus it gets rid of that ugly accordian tube LOL

Now just need time to get it installed and roast the tires ;)

sounds amazing!  minimal drone, and feels like a bit more power!

Keep it cool... Hy-Per Lube Coolant

Ok - While it's starting to cool down outside, the California Summer's can get brutal...

I've added Hy-Per Lube Coolant to every car in the past decade and it helps to keep engine temps slightly cooler... especially with a forced-induction car like the Focus ST - internal temps make a huge difference in power!

Looks like a tuity-fruity when you add it LOL

Obviously I will have to take it for a spin to get it all mixed  :)

Great reviews too for a $7 bottle... http://www.superstreetonline.com/how-to/engine/0703-turp-cooling-system-additives/

Highly recommended!!  👍👍

Welcome to our newest addition - 2016 Ford Focus ST with ST3 Package

After our 2011 Mazda Miata PRHT was totaled in May, we have been looking around for a new daily driver for my wife...  Initially she thought she wanted a Kia Optima SXL - turbo automatic, sure it was loaded with every bell and whistle possible - but was lacking the 'fun' factor that she loves in driving...  to my surprise, when the salesman at the dealership mentioned the Focus ST she perked up... and I was excited because the ST has some great 'pocket rocket' street cred...

Edmunds Summary Review of the 2016 Ford Focus ST Hatchback

  • Small cars don't have to be boring. You'll get a kick out of the 2016 Ford Focus ST. It's fast, polished and ready for both daily driving duty and weekend fun. Read more to learn what else we like about this year's Ford Focus ST.

  • Pros

Powerful turbocharged engine paired with a precise six-speed manual gearbox makes for an engaging driving experience; sharp handling around turns; civilized ride quality for a performance car; interior looks stylish.  Can't complain about 252HP in a little car like this - really ZOOMS!

Cons

  • Automatic transmission isn't available (we got it because is IS a manual!)
  • Some drivers may find the optional Recaro seats overly confining. (we love em!)

What's New for 2016

  • The 2016 Focus ST gets Ford's Sync 3 infotainment system as an option, replacing the controversial MyFord Touch system. (another great reason to get this car, the touchscreen is great!)
  • Carbon-fiber interior trim has also been added to the available ST3 package. (looks snazzy!)
Our car came with the 402A package (ST3) - which is fully loaded, we added the optional wheels and moonroof - and wow - what a drive!  This blog will be showing what we do next... :)
